Up to this point, my posts have all been pretty reflective and vulnerable. I believe that vulnerability is a positive attribute, and have really appreciated how many of you have mentioned that you gain a great deal from such entries.
This, however, will not be such a post.
Zero depth and even less heart-wrenching tales and insight.
I just want names - names of grandparents, actually. Who picked the names that your kids would call your parents, and how did you decide what they would be? Did you have a name all picked out, only to have your son or daughter come up with something on their own?
And, most importantly (not because it has any direct bearing on my own situation, of course), what do you do if parents want to be called the same thing?
Would love to hear your stories!
It's funny how grandparent names evolve...sometimes unintentionally! When Abby was born, my mother was automatically "Popo," which is Chinese for grandma. We then joked that my dad should be called "Pop-Pop," which is what the grandfather was called in the TV show "Arrested Development" (one of our favorites!). Abby somehow picked up on this joke and it stuck! Even when we tried changing it to a normal "Grandpa," she kept called him "Pop-Pop"! So now it's Popo and Pop-Pop for my parents (nice alliteration, huh?). For Jaime's mom and step-dad, we stuck to the traditional "Grandma" and "Grandpa." For Jaime's dad, we still did "Grandpa" b/c he wanted to be called that. We thought about a different name, but wanted to just honor what he wanted to be called. His wife is "Tutu" (Hawaiin for grandma), so we can distinguish between "Grandma/Grandpa" and "Grandpa/Tutu".... Sorry, long story. But it gets complicated when you have more than 2 sets!
ReplyDeleteGreat story! Sounds like your names came from all over the place. Thanks, guys!
